Question 7: How did you attract/address your audience?

In our media product "Amelia" we tried to appeal to a certain target audience. We aimed our production to be aimed at 16-19 year olds of both genders.

We addressed our audience by using particular actors which would appeal to the audience of the horror genre. For example in our film we used an attractive young blonde girl, this would attract the male audience, which is part of our target audience. We also emphasised on gender, we used this to attract/address our audience because it allowed them to connect with the main protagonist.

The set and locations that we have used in our horror film would attract our target audience because it is set in school, this therefore means that the audeince can relate to it, since our target audience should or has attended school.

We used sound because the music sets up the atmosphere such as, tension, sinster or creepy etc.  At the end of our film there is silence and this was very effective because it didn't give away anything but gives of a disturbing atmosphere, this leaves the audience with the unknown and they want to know what happened to the character.

Our productions has key moments such as the blood on the tree, the target audience would find this part interesting, since it creates suspense and keep them wondering what happened and how it got there.

Question 6: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Technologies used in pre production:

- Adobe Premiere Pro: I used this to edit our preliminary, this was very interesting because I have never done any extensive and professional editing before with a good software, and I needed to gain new skills for my final product

Social Networking: I used Facebook to contact other members in the group. We mainly used private message, and this enabled us to create things such as a shooting schedule; because we all had to arrange a date that we could all film and edit on.

YouTube: This was used to upload the preliminary task. It was easy and very simple to use, and I already had knowledge of YouTube anyway, so there was no problems.

Advantages:
- Adobe Premiere Pro:- It allowed me to gain more editing skills and how to add good, relevant effects and transitions.
- I was able to create titles with new fonts, that are not basic.
- Social Networks: - It allowed me to communicate between the other group members, and this was handy because it made it easier to organise a date for film work.
- If we had any errors or problems regarded the process of the production, we were able to quickly contact each other.

Disadvantages:
-Adobe Premiere Pro: - The exporting took a very long time, and sometimes froze half through.
- Some of the transitions and effects were not  very professional and made our film look tacky, so we decided to take them out, and try to find a simple font.
- Social Networks: - One  of the members of our group, sometimes didn’t answer the messages, this made it harder to create discussions and creating filming schedule dates.
- YouTube: - It took the quality down of our production

Technologies used in production:
Camera: Samsung NX100
Tripod
Microphone

Advantages:
- Camera: - The shots were in high definition and this improved the quality of our footage and made it look more professional
-Tripod: - It made the shots more steady and made it easier to create a good panning shot
-Microphone:  The Microphone picked up sounds such as rustling very well, and you could clearly hear the dialogue

Disadvantages:
- Camera: - Sometimes when we wanted to shoot a new scene, it would not record, this made it difficult.
- Tripod: - It took a long time to set up
- Microphone: - It picked up a lot of background noises; however we already gained good technological knowledge so we were able to edit them out, and place new sounds above it.

Blogger:
Blogger is a blogging site that is used to write up things such as articles and pretty much anything and everything that they want. We used the website
www.blogger.com to write up the process of the film, and extra work, such as evaluations and essays. On my blog (http://mediabella.blogspot.co.uk/) I have posted things such as, planning of our film, research findings, photos of our setting, our character, and initial ideas, and more. A blog was a good idea because it allowed us to look back on the research. I learnt that it was a good way to document my research on a website because it allowed me to have easy and convenient access to the information needed for the production of my film.

I’ve improved and feel more confident in:
I feel more confident creating footage, with more professional cameras and learning to create a steady shot.
During the construction of the product, I learnt how to effectively use shots
I feel more confident with video editing software’s
I was able to gain more knowledge and skills for editing, such as slowing down and speeding up certain shots.

Question 5: Looking back on your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I have learnt a lot producing my project.  Looking back on my preliminary task, I have learnt various new technical skills and how to create a successful  product. My preliminary task was very boring and it had no creativity. However, in my full product I have made sure to keep consistent and keep the creativity to a good standard, for example by using fake blood and different camera angels and effects. Also for out prelim task we began filming without any planning, we then discovered our first idea for our product didn’t work and we had to come up with a new plan. This took up time but we didn’t want any clear or vital mistakes in our final product. I also found that it was very important to schedule time to re shoot shots that don’t fit in with the horror film genre, and to re do any continuity errors.

With our film we needed to take great care with mise en scene  whereas in our prelim task it wasn’t that important. We has to do a lot of extensive research to gain inspiration  because we had to ensure that it fit in with the horror genre and that signified todays era.  This made finding a location but since it is a horror movie we had to choose carefully where we filmed because we had to make sure that it was suited to the horror conventions; for example the woods.

Also the quality of my editing skills have significantly improving. For example in our prelim there isn’t any titles or  music in the prelim because I did not know to place titles or music into the product, but now that my knowledge has expanded I can use these both effectively . I have learnt a lot because I have made the final product run smoother through effects such as dip to black, these effects have made my media product more effective and professional.

Question 4: Who would be the audience for your media product?

We believe that the main demographic who would enjoy our film is both genders ages between 16 and 19 we think this because, the film has a female lead and the men may feel as though she is attractive (Male gaze theory), and also females can relate to that character because she’s a generic teenage girl, there is nothing strange or different about her.  We chose the this age range because we feel as though it is appropriate and that many teenagers are attracted to the horror movie genre.
The demographic that we believe would enjoy the film the most through factors such as relating to characters and identifying themselves with the setting, for example our film is set in Britain and the target audience will identify themselves with that particular setting, you can tell that it is set in Britain because, of the accent and the country side this is a British signifier.
The Hypodermic Needle Effect affects the audience because this theory states that the audience takes in and believes the ideologies in all media texts. The messages within a media text are injected into the audience like a syringe. The audience are therefore powerless to resist, but it can depend on their views but there is nothing they can physically do about it.

For our film to be successful, it is important that we are aware of a specific target audience that we believe our film will appeal to specifically and the demographic that we believe would enjoy.

Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Distribution is when a company buys the rights to distribute a film and they have the film itself and they send it off to different cinemas and company’s all over the country
Film distribution:
The media institution that could possibly distribute our media film, would be Momentum Pictures because they have distributed horror movies what are popular amongst teenagers such as ‘Woman in Black’   and ‘House at the End of the Street’. They also distribute in the UK, this would make it appropriate to distribute our film in the United Kingdom.

Online distribution:
Youtube have a service that you can upload a video and get monetised for it.  We could take this route if  we wanted recognition. Instead of uploading our entire film we have come to the conclusion that we will only upload the trailer. An advantage of Youtube is that it is popular so that we would be guaranteed to get a lot of views.  In addition,
Netflix is a service that allows you to watch films, though you have to pay a monthly cost of around £6 it is a very good service and we think it is a good service to use to distribute our films because it is because increasingly  popular amongst the teenage generation. The target audience for Netflix is around 16-18 and we know this through the article we read. We  We also conducted a survey in our media group and we found that 50% of the class use Netflix, whereas the service Lovefilm statistics have decreased so therefore that is why we believe that Netflix is a better service to distribute our film, it is becoming a lot more popular for the teenage generation. Myself being a teenager, I use Netflix and I believe that it is very good and effective for the film market. The main reason teenagers use Netflix and Lovefilm is because its available on different platforms and its very convenient.

Cinema distribution:
The cinema that could distribute our film could be ODEON. We chose this because it is popular amongst the teenage generation.

Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups

In our final production, the main character is Amelia (Played by Ellie Plummer).
Women:  In our film woman are represented positively in our film as the lead character is a female and she is also the protagonist. However, she is represented as being vulnerable and weak because she is in an isolated setting and Is getting strange unknown calls on her phone. We got the idea of unknown calls from the movie “Scream” because the character Casey is seen in the kitchen and the phone rings, when she picks it up,  she thinks it’s a friend playing a trick on her, but then she is asked if she has a boyfriend and she lies to the person down the phone and says that she doesn’t.  Furthermore we hoped to achieve this representation of being venerable and weak by the use of mise-en-scene. For example, the costumes that we have used on our character are appropriate for her age, the reason it we chose appropriate clothing is that she is in further education so she needs to look formal and well educated but also because we wanted to go against the hypersexual view of teenagers. The character is easy to connect with as she is very respectable, even though she doesn’t say much. The character isn’t shown as “damsel in distress” because she tries and figure out why the blood is on the trees, and who is in the woods.

Youth: We have represented the youth as vulnerable and clumsy, but yet still independent.  We hoped to achieve this by using mise-en-scene, by things such as props, the phone is the main prop. The phone have cracks on the screen and this can connote that she is a typical teenage girl, who is somewhat careless and clumsy. You can tell that she is independent because she stays in an isolated room, alone doing school work and then is seen walking in the woods, without a group of friends or a sexual partner. This goes against most horror conventions.

Question 1: In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Horror films are made and designed to:
- Frighten and panic the audience
- Cause apprehension
- Raise the audiences fears
- Shock the audience
- Never have a true happy ending

My film production confuses the audience. It confuses them because there is no gore in the opening, just unassuming and simple shots of a girl in a isolated room and in the woods. It isn’t until the end that the audience realises that the girl’s life has possibly be ended.

Characters:
In my production, there are two characters. There is a girl and the villain. However, other than seeing the characters face, you only see the hand, this leaves the audience with the unknown and wondering who it is. My film challenges the usual characteristics of horror character, because the girl is isolated on her own, without a male to protect her. There is no attribute to the way the villain kills its victims because it’s not been properly focused on, however  you could say that in a way the killer does have a way he/she kills the victims, because the girl gets unknown calls and there is  blood on the trees, this gives the audience the impression that something is probably going to happen to the girl, and in the same way, the others were killed.

Fears:
Usually in horror films, they show these characteristics of fear:
- Vulnerability
- The unknown
- Death

There is obviously more but these are what are considered the top 3, I know this because I conducted a survey amongst 16/17 year olds and this is what they thought what the most popular.

My film production shows the conventions of the horror with fear, because it uses specific shots like close ups and point of view shots to express these fears. In my production there is a young, unaccompanied woman, who hears rustling sounds as she is walking through the woods. My production covers all 3 top areas of the characteristics of fear because it focusses on what are considered frightening to woman and that they are vulnerable when they’re alone and they need a man to look after them.

The title of my film and Font:

The title of my film is “Amelia” its called this because it’s the name of the girl in the production, The title  is shown at the end of the production. I created a dark black background with the title shooting in onto the black without any sound, this was done purposely so that it creates a sense of the unknown and that they don’t know exactly what happened to the girl. It is in “Brush Script MT” font, which could be quite posh for a horror font, however this is what I was aiming for because in my view It made it look like as if someone else.
In the film, all the titles are the same font, I did this because I wanted to continue with the whole theme of oddness  and creepy setting but also because I wanted to keep the flow of the titles appealing for the audience, in addition this was done because I wanted to keep it professional.  The title “Amelia” is in the centre of the shot because I wanted to grab the audience’s attention as well as focus that the film is purely based upon Amelia, who is the main character.  Even though the fonts are the same throughout the production, the titles at the start of the film are white, this was done for a reason, because we wanted it to stand out and attract the audience.  The colour white
symbolizes innocence and purity. White reflects light and is considered a calm colour. This is ironic because my production is a horror film and she evidentially dies, we chose white because we wanted to show that her life has ended and that the situation isn’t so calm. Though, at the end the title is in red and this is effective because the colour red is an emotionally intense colour and in this case the colour red connotes danger, death and blood.
Setting/Location:
For the setting of my production, I decided to use the school and the woods, and I did this for many reasons. Firstly, because it was convenient and I am at school every week day and it was easy to film with the schedule that I had, because it never interrupted anyone or my daily life. Secondly, because I wanted the character to be portrayed as vulnerable young woman, and this could have been easily done, if she was isolated in a class room and in the woods, furthermore, an isolated setting is a convention of horror and so is the woods. Thirdly, In many know horrors they seem to use small compact spaces such as small rooms or standard hours to create a sense of immobilisation, and we wanted to go against this by having a wider space which gives the audience the impression that anything could be out there, and this is done by the eerie music.

Costume and Props:

In any horror film, and generally in every film costume and props are very important because it can connote different things, whether it’s representing a role, showing signs of stereotypes they are both required. The costume in my production is simple but is yet still effective. The character is wearing a light blue long sleeved shirt and plain black trousers, she is generally covered, and this goes against the horror convention of woman because she is not seen an hypersexual. In the production I used very few props, but the most significant is the phone because it has a crack on it and this connotes carelessness and therefore gives the audience the impression that she is vulnerable. At first, our original character had brunette hair and we were considering giving that person a blonde wig and dress her in skimpy and revealing clothing so that we can go along with the convention of horror and connote the stereotypical blonde girl.

Camerawork and Editing:
My camera work mainly consisted of various different shots and distances. The main shots that were used were, close ups and medium long shot. In my opinion my favourite shot is the one where the character, Amelia is touching the tree with blood on it. This created a lot of emphasis and created fear.  The editing I used for my production was hard and longitudinal because I got the same scene with different shots and put them into an sequential order, I then trimmed them to about 3-7 seconds long, I believe this a good amount because having anything longer will be longitudinal and it will bore the audience, it also created a good amount of the time for the titles to come in. In some of the shots the lighting changes, however in one shot, when the character is walking into the woods, it makes it look like the woods is dark. This is an advantage because it creates a sense of the unknown and makes the woods seem like it’s a very sinister and unsafe place to be. The software that I used was Adobe Premiere, this software has various effects such as “Speed up” this enabled me to quicken up the shots, and thus making them go faster. This helped a lot with the shots that were to elongated but still needed to be used because they are effective, for example when the character is walking, we needed to quicken that up, furthermore we didn’t speed it up to much as this would of made it unrealistic because she is walking a bit to fast and therefore made it very obvious that we’ve used editing effects.

NEW SCRIPT

We decided to change our script because we thought it would be to diffiuclt to have the era in the 80s and because there was too much going on at the time, and the shot sequence didn't look proffensinal enough, and by this change we learnt about organisation

(New) Costume Planning/Character

This is our main character, Amelia.
She is 16 years old and in Sixth Form.  The audience will relate to her because she is of a similar age, and in further education.  Since she is
a female lead, men may feel  that she is attractive (Male gaze theory) and that’s why they want to watch the film, and also females can relate to that character because she’s a generic teenage girl, there is nothing strange or different about her.
In any horror film, and generally in every film costume and props are very important because it can connote different things, whether it’s representing a role, showing signs of stereotypes they are both required.
